Scared by the Horror Stories? Avoid Getting Ripped Off By Replacement Window Scam Artists

You are here: Home / Blog / Scared by the Horror Stories? Avoid Getting Ripped Off By Replacement Window Scam Artists

November 21, 2009 by bwm

It’s a sad but true fact: not every replacement window specialist is an upstanding, ethical person.  In fact, replacement window dealers have a less than savory reputation – a reputation created by replacement window dealers who operate out of an ‘office’ that doubles as the passenger seat of their car, who take measurements and deposits, never to be seen again, or, if they do install windows, do such a poor job and make such a mess that the homeowner finds themselves wishing they’d never even thought about replacement windows.

That’s a pity, because, dollar for dollar, high quality replacement windows are among the best investments you can make in your home.  By retaining warmed air in the winter and cool air in the summer, replacement windows can help lower your energy costs tremendously.  They add to the resale value of your home, and are often more attractive than the original windows (and more often are much more attractive than older, ugly aluminum replacement windows from back in the day!)

The trick is to find a reputable replacement window manufacturer, and work with a reputable replacement window specialist.  How do you find these people?  There are a couple of ways.  First, ask your family and friends about who did thier windows.  (This is often a good source of horror stories as well!  That way you’ll know who to avoid.)  Double check their recommendation with the Better Business Bureau. You don’t want a record of complaints and dissatisfied customers!  Finally, interview your potential replacement window specialist.  Ask for references.  A reputable company will be able to connect you with satisfied customers.  Do your research, and you’re much more likely to enjoy your replacement windows!
